Refrigerator Tour: What We Eat and How We Store It
Is this a random post? Maybe. But it’s 2020, so anything goes, as well as the fact that we are all home a lot more and food is at the forefront. So maybe it’s not so random anymore. Our kitchen is the heart of our home. We spend so much time here, so we want it to be the best place, enjoyable and usable. Refrigerator organization is actually a major tool that will make you feel better and eat better at the same time, it’s so important!
I’m giving you our fridge tour which will show what we are currently eating these days as well as our current refrigerator organization tips. Some is personal preference, like I like my fruit and avocados to be cold, and others are the recommended way to store items.
We love having plants in our fridge, it gives it a sense of life! We store cilantro which we use often for street tacos and guacamole, in water. We cut the bottom and change out the water every week and it really gives the cilantro a very long life. One tip for things like berries, is that I don’t wash them until right before eating. I’ve found that it shortens the life span and makes them go soggy really fast. If I unpack and just leave it, they seem to last longer.
Refrigerator Organization
We’re obviously going to have kid-friendly and ready to eat items that make our life easy. For the most part we cook and prepare everything, but are working through picky eating habits, so we do our best with some items.
I like to group certain foods together for easy grab and prepare, and then others, like to keep in their respective drawers. In the crispers, I keep most of our vegetables and unpack out of bags. If we are making that week and a meal has been planned out, things get moved to a shelf mainly so we don’t forget about the item. This has happened before, and halfway through dinner we remember a side we meant to make, and then end up finding it in the back of a drawer a month later in scary condition!
I LOVE milk in glass bottles. There is something so farmhouse about it, and brands that are sold this way are usually really quality products. I followed suit and put my oat milk in one, using a dry erase marker to label it as well as add the date on the back.
Here’s a rundown of our current refrigerator cravings that we incorporate into meals:
- sprouts
- all kinds of fruit! It’s easy to put on the side of a plate when it’s cut up and prepared!
- fresh herbs
- canned artichokes: I literally eat these out of the can
- fresh artichokes: I boil these with cornflake crumbs and then dip in butter when prepared!
- asparagus: an easy side, add parmesan… to any veggie really!
- cucumbers and cherry tomatoes: the kids will eat cucumbers and then Robert and I make a summer salad with olive oil and vinegar.
And as usual, you know we love our Samsung refrigerator. We bought it when we first moved in and it’s been so good going on 6 years now. I love the french doors and room it provides in both the top and freezer bottom.
