Teeth Whitening: Myth Busting And Facts You Should Know
This might seem like a random post, but you should know that it’s not because teeth and their appearance is one of the most important things to people, let alone a window into your health! I’m asked often what I use on my teeth since I take photos all the time, and of my dental routine. One of my tips is that I literally never go to bed without brushing my teeth. Like even if I fall asleep in a kid’s bed, I will wake up in the middle of the night to brush! I’ve never had a cavity or braces, so I do think some genetics have helped me along the way too, but I’m big on good teeth. One of my followers, turned friend, then turned collab buddy is a dentist, and a passionate one at that. We connected quite some time ago and it’s one of those relationships that is super easy, but always so nice to have someone to be connected with to share things. Dr. Priyanka Seekand is the sweetest, most genuine person, and has always been so supportive of City Peach. We have a love for fashion and figured it might be fun to combine both our passions and our separate knowledge. Which is why (later on tonight) we are going to be doing a giveaway! We will be combining something you use every day and stirring some awareness around your dental health, as well as all of our love for clothes… that’s why you are here in the first place, right?
Something I asked Dr. Priyanka awhile ago was about teeth whitening because it’s something I had been terrified of since I have super sensitive teeth. I began to trust her knowing I could voice my concerns and potentially do something about it in a new way. Years ago I tried Crest Whitestrips and realized it just wasn’t for me because I would wake up in the middle of the night in pain, my gums would throb and I would have piercing pain when going out into the cold. Priyanka is smart and makes sure she is up on the latest dental trends, but also tries the newest products and methods out there. We talked through a teeth whitening option that would work for me, and it did! It’s basically a light method that does the whitening, as opposed to stripping away the top enamel or mainly just bleach. It’s strictly for the dentist office which typically produces quicker results in less time. I do get a home version too, that I use as maintenance. The home version is less concentrated than at the dentist’s office, but still utilizes the light whitening process. When we did the process in office, my gums were lined with basically a border to block the whitening product from getting on them. I have a few places of receding gums possibly from brushing too hard in the past, and this is what makes the nerves sensitive, because products can get in. I had a few zingers the next day from cold air, but I was so surprised that it did not hurt or throb after. I was terrified for years to try this, and I’m so glad I did with someone I trust!
A little bit about Dr. Priyanka Seekand because her story is really interesting in that she takes so much pride in her passion for dentistry. She even went to more school than necessary/required because she loved it but also because she wanted to be completely well rounded in information and practices possible. Her practice is called Seek and Smile Dentistry, a play on her last name… so clever!
Dr. Seekand trained at the Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry. After dental school, Dr. Seekand completed advanced training at Albert Einstein Medical Center. She served as Chief Resident and gained additional experience in the diagnosis and management of complex dental cases. Her passion for dentistry is displayed in her ongoing commitment to advanced education and her dedication to her patients’ overall health. Through cosmetic & implant dentistry, Dr. Seekand helps patients rediscover their attractive and confident smile. She strives to make your experience special and looks forward to providing superior dental care for her patients. Dr. Seekand is involved with local and national chapters of dental societies. She is a member of the American Dental Association, Georgia Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, and American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
When she is not busy practicing dentistry and running the business, she loves to spend time with her husband Varun, son Jiyan and mini poodle, Maxie. She even brings her son to work frequently, and I connected with this so much. She started her own practice because her family is so important to her, so she currently creates her own work life balance. We connected on so many levels with motherhood, a love for fun things like fashion, the entrepreneurial life, and balancing it all!
Now let’s talk about teeth situations you can relate to! Here are a few myths that you might be wondering about, that helps to have info right from the source of a dentist!
Whitening options:
Over-the-counter (OTC) options include a variety of products from toothpastes to paint-on gels that can be bought at your drugstore or grocery store. The toothpastes primarily rely on abrasives to remove surface stains though some also contain low levels of peroxide as well. Whitening strips rely solely on peroxide to bleach teeth. Translation: These are not as strong as the products used by your Dentist! Whitening is also just not a one and done process. It requires maintenance and you definitely don’t want to put food or drink on them that will stain, so just be conscious.
