Blue Kitchen: Easy and Affordable Ways to Renovate Your Kitchen

I knew for awhile I wanted an updated blue kitchen. I just knew it was the color I wanted. We played around with the idea of completely gutting the kitchen and getting new cabinets but painting is a great way to cut down on cost, and give our kitchen a completely new look. I didn’t realize how good they could look. I browsed the internet for awhile looking at all shades of blue and then details like hardware and what all looks good together. I am slowly learning about what flows with home decor but this is something that hasn’t come naturally to me like fashion and clothes have.

Most of the updates in our kitchen were sourced just by me, as opposed to having a designer do it, or lend suggestions. I realized I am a rookie and this is our first kitchen remodel, but I learned a lot. So the blue color is Sherwin Williams ‘Stardew’, and looked more grey on the paint swatch. I did want to make sure I got the blue/grey right, not too grey, and not too blue, so looking at it in different lighting by itself, then against the rest of the swatches I had, was helpful. We did have someone (a contractor) come paint for us, which I do think how you paint is key (with a spray gun). They primed the cabinets and then painted and the entire process took a week.

Our Blue Kitchen

Everything we did to brighten up our kitchen is this:

  • painted cabinets
  • new countertops (we went with a marble white quartz)
  • subway tile backsplash: simple process of picking online and going to pick up the order at Floor and Decor. (the least expensive was just the simple flat white. As you get more color or texture, they go up in price)
  • farmhouse sink: I got ours on Amazon, and this was like a 2 week process of measuring and doing research on what kind we wanted and why. Ours does have a lip on the front where it could have stuck out, which was what I originally wanted, but was lost somewhere in the countertop measuring and contractor communication. I do love the large sink and it’s one of my favorite parts of the kitchen. Ours came with a stainless steel rack at the bottom which I didn’t even know existed, and is a game changer as it keeps the bottom clean!
  • faucet: I knew I wanted something brass/gold and this was at a great price. In a forever home, I think I would invest and get real brass, but this was a great option
  • hardware for cabinets: I found mine on Amazon and am very happy with them!
  • open shelving (this is something I would do differently next time. I would get better shelves and invest in good brackets)
  • vent hood above the stove: we tore out a cabinet to do this, and they had to go through the wall to create a vent outside. We were always surprised and annoyed that the house was not built to vent outside. This is why we accumulated a grease stain in the ceiling. We cook a lot, so aside from the aesthetic of a hood which is pretty, we needed it for practicality and to preserve our kitchen. I found mine at Home Depot.

We chose to completely tile that far left wall to brighten everything up, but also create consistency, as the walls in our home have no end.

We have a Samsung refrigerator of course, which we love and bought when we built the house. It’s wide and the perfect size for us, although I am eyeing the smart fridge for down the road! We kept in it place, and it seemed to take on a whole new look paired next to the blue painted cabinets! I love the french door design, and an icemaker and water on the outside was always a feature I knew I wanted. The freezer bin on the bottom is huge and I love the pull out compartment in it too. We have gone with Samsung for most of our appliances and are alway happy with the quality and longevity they provide!

If you are wondering if the stainless steel is hard to keep clean, it isn’t. It does take a lot for it to look dirty, but I do also have a fridge cleaner for stainless steel and fingerprints wipe right off.

I accented our Samsung refrigerator with cookbooks on either side, to create a homey look and so it’s not so stark with just cabinets and a fridge. We actually use all these, but I love collecting pretty cookbooks as decor as well.

You can shop all my kitchen items and details below. A refrigerator is an investment for sure, but I’ve learned that is something you do not want to skimp on. You will have it for years and need it to be reliable, and I truly love Samsung products for all of these reasons. Here is ours, and this is the next one I want!
