The Ultimate Aqua Hair Extensions FAQ

I love talking hair, and it’s actually one of the most asked about topics I get! I’m always down to share my secrets on how to get volume, and maintain good hair. This is how I know I’m qualified enough for you: I do most everything on my own and have always been good at doing hair since first learning on Barbie at the age of 5. The crazy backstory is that I actually used to do my own extensions. Like back in the day when I would go to Sally Beauty, match my own color, cut them into layers, then glue them in myself! I’m dead serious, it sounds like a tragedy. The crazy thing is that I was asked about my hair for yearsss when I had those extensions in. I wore them off and on around the time I was working at Abercrombie, in NYC, and even when I came back to Atlanta. I will search for photos one day and share what they looked like!

But today, as requested, I have a full breakdown on my current Aqua tape-in extensions that I have from Ashley J Salon. We will go over everything from pricing to upkeep. If you are thinking of investing in them, you do have to know, they are an investment. But like anything that is quality, you get what you pay for, so you want to make sure you are getting quality hair, AND service. The person doing your hair extensions needs to be certified in putting them in, or it can cause serious damage to your hair.

If you have followed for awhile, you know that my hair girl is Ashley. I’ve been seeing her for about 2.5 years now and I trust her. I am very picky about stylists considering I have always thought I did my hair better than anyone, I just couldn’t color it. She is different and gets every little detail exactly how I want it. Ashley has been doing hair for over 15 years. She worked for a salon out of Dawsonville for awhile and recently last year, opened her own. All of her clients followed her. She’s good and I highly recommend her if you are looking for someone.

Here is my before back in late March without my Aqua hair extensions:

This is when Nate from NathanielMarklaFera came to the salon for a training and we put in my tape-ins for the first time. I have since gone back for highlights, a root touch up because my blonde tends to get brassy, and then Ashley took my Aqua hair extensions out 2 weeks ago and put new tape on them and moved them up. The first photo in this article is from 2 weeks ago, so you can see that my hair has grown a bit, and still looks really healthy!

As I break down all the info on my Aqua hair extensions, it’s coming from questions you all sent in from Instagram, and then information that is specific to my preferences, or tape-in extensions specifically.

Why Aqua tape-in hair extensions and not any other kind?

This is a personal preference kind of. I am willing to try anything, so while I haven’t personally tried them, what I like about tape-ins might answer this. Hand tieds are a huge heavy weft of hair that goes across your scalp. What I like about tape-ins, is that they are super light, and all over, so when you shampoo your hair, you are getting in between all of them, AND the root dries faster. Tape-ins blend more because you are sandwiching them throughout your scalp. Hand tied extensions are a huge fad right now, but they actually aren’t anything new. Ashley has seen them for years, it’s only because the hair by chrissy girl in Arizona is putting them on the instagram map. What those are specifically is a thread, a row that then the weft of hair is tied onto across the scalp. Also, in order to do hand-tieds, the stylist pays thousands of dollars and hours in training, so make sure you are choosing someone that is certified if you go this route. My tape-ins are a tape that adhere to a very thin layer of hair, and backed with another piece of tape. That piece can either have hair (this is considered double the hair to that strand) or it can just be a tape for the back. It all depends on how thick you need your extensions to be. As you look at this like an investment, don’t get caught up in what other people have or the latest trend. In order for your hair to look the best for you, you need to do what’s best for your hair.

Some people can actually not be a good candidate for hand tied because you need sturdy hair to tie onto that wouldn’t rip out. Like for example, you wouldn’t put it on the baby hairs on the front of your head because it’s just not enough.

The amount of hair you will need will vary. Which is related to price as well. Here’s why: it will depend mainly on a blunt line cut. If extensions are something you want in general, the most important thing to do right away is NOT get a haircut. Because the line is the hardest to hide and can require more hair. When it came to my tape-ins, we used a lot of hair than I have previously used, because a few months ago, my blunt cut line was more apparent. So with the tape-ins, you can do where both sides of the tape (that come together on the strand of hair), have hair attached, or it can just be a ‘single’ where the back side of the tape is just adhering to the front side. Some people get strictly for volume too, as opposed to for length. This is so helpful for that postpartum hair loss and thinning.

So here’s the info on my Aqua hair extensions:

Come in for a complimentary consultation. All salons that do extensions should offer this, because they can get you pricing that works for exactly what you need. You can get your hair colored and matched with Ashley, or you can have her match your color to the swatches, if you recently had color, or have a loyalty to a hair person of your own… I know how that is!

Hair Extensions Brand:

Aqua Hair

Aqua Hair Extensions Care and Maintenance:

You can wash like normal, just use a color treated shampoo for color treated hair. I have been using a leave in conditioner every time I wash it, and just spray it on. If you want other product, stick to crown and your roots, just try to stay away from oil based products. I dry it with a dryer to make sure the roots are dry, don’t sleep with wet hair because the bond can break down over time. Having an extension brush is key, the bristles are softer, different from a paddle brush, and it doesn’t pull on where it’s attached to your real hair. Dry shampoo and hair spray are ok, also try to stick to salon based products.

Aqua Hair Extensions Rebonding & Installation:

new tape and moving out from the growth will be 6-8 weeks. Yes, you can color your roots or get highlights without doing anything to the extensions.

In all extensions but the keratin bonded ones, you get to keep the hair, so it’s an investment that you are able to use again.

I had 7 packs of hair (10 come in a pack) because I had double sided. If my hair ever grows out, I would probably require less.

Hair Extensions Pricing Starting At:

  • Keratin fusion: $1050
  • Tape-in: $900
  • Handtied Weft: $2200
  • Volume package: $350

details: if you require a lot of packs, Ashley works with you, as the more you need, the more $ you will get off the initial order.

If you are interested, you can contact Ashley at Ashley J Salon at 678-807-8743 or on instagram HERE. She regularly brings in classes and training for the salon, and currently has 4 stylists there that are able to do them. If you say I brought you in, you will get $125 off your service!

I hope this helps, and just remember, hair is fun and doesn’t have to be forever. If you’re up to try Aqua hair extensions, it also is very worth the investment because it can make you confident and change things up, as well as cut down on getting ready time. I say this because I can get away with washing my hair wayyyyy less when I have my Aqua hair extensions. I wash it 1-2 times a week, mostly just once! With product on my roots, the hair and styling lasts for daysss.

Don’t forget to email me if you have any questions about hair extensions! xo!
