The Jean Edit: Everything you need to know about the latest denim styles

Denim Styles: This is one of my most requested topics on my Instagram stories, blog posts, mom facebook groups, and clients that I style. Even my friends in person ask questions about jean fit and styles. I am here to break it all down for you, so you can hopefully find the style that works best for you, but also be up to date on the latest trends. And not that you have to be, but truly finding a great fitting pair of jeans is everything. It will give you confidence and make everything else that you are wearing look to the nines!

  • Here are details that I look for from me personally: I like jeans to be the right height, always my ankle showing… so essentially ‘cropped’ but not too cropped. I know, it’s complicated. That’s why sifting through denim styles, finding the perfect pair of jeans is work, and once you do and know the brands that work for you, it CAN become foolproof.
  • I like the jeans to be high waist, ones that accentuate the bum and hug the natural waist. The right jean will make the butt look really good, and sometimes do you favors. I see so many people out there wearing the wrong jean that actually flattens their booty… don’t let this happen to you. There are too many brands that help you in this department.
  • I prefer jeans that have elastane in them. There are a few Levi’s and even a pair of Anine Bing jeans that I really like that have no stretch, but the fit is so good so I let it slide. Otherwise, the slight stretch makes them actually comfortable and soft.

In my opinion, straight leg is where it’s at. Or even the ‘kick flare’. With all of these though, I look for slim in the thigh and knee, and then going out right below the knee. I know the trending conversation is to skinny jean or not to skinny jean. To which I say, not right now. I have never thought they were that flattering, they just hug the ankle too aggressively. There are straight leg jeans out there that can almost pass as skinny, but they do your legs much more favors! Having them be straight the whole way down (but not baggy in the knee) and cropped to show your ankle and have it be smaller than the opening of the jean cuff, is much more flattering than a skinny jean that hugs the hips and accentuates every curve. If you are wearing high boots, that’s kind of an exception since you do want to have them tuck in (unless you’re going for high fashion right now which is actually kind of baggy and stuffed in… but we can touch on this later). Then the look is skinny but met with a boot that balances out the top, do you see what I mean about balancing the silhouette to the eye? There are ways to style yourself to do yourself favors and also that make you feel good, and comfortable!

Here are my top recommended jeans by style, and then you can shop them by store or brand below. There are good ones with a few different price points. I recommend all of these that I’m sharing and have them personally. You do get what you pay for with pricier brands, but there are also great ones at an affordable price too.

The Mom Jean – this is usually a high waist and loose fit, straight leg jean. I have LOVED all of H&M’s ‘mom jean’ fits, and have them in white, off white, and a black stone wash

Straight Leg – to me this is a bit different in the fit, and some fit the butt better. I love Levi’s for this and have my tried and true pair that I always try to find. I also love AGolde for this too, however, some are just not high rise enough for me. I love my Riley pair, and I think they look great… just feeling-wise, I wish they were a bit higher. Also with straight leg, if they are too long, roll them, I love that baggy leg and rolled crop look too!

Kick Flare/Demi Boot – this is my favorite style right now. (Ya girl liked this style back in 2016 before it was everywhere… and lucky for your options, it’s now everywhere!) My absolute favorite is the Mother brand, which are an investment, but so so worth it. They are my second favorite to my tried and true levi’s. They are similar to the Madewell Demi boot (also good, and I’ve had for years). To me with difference is in how slim the thigh and leg are, and Mother is a bit more slimming.

Trendy skinny/flare with slits – I literally had 2 pairs of these in 8th grade and I’ll never forget them lol. These are super on trend, and I like a few styles out there, for very specific outfits. I still tend to lean towards a cropped jean always. But these might be fun to try.

Flared jeans – they are making a comeback, but make sure you do them right! Right now an on-trend flare can be cropped hitting at the ankle (it’s a lewk), or go all the way down and elongate your leg. I prefer darker colors for this. (I also included a pair of corduroys here because they are gorgeous and I love all these colors! I might even take a pair of these and the Abercrombie long ones and cut them to make them hit my ankle!

The White Jean – these are my favorite right now. Sometimes hard to find, but always in for every season!
